The Difference Between DDP and DAP Shipping
DDP and DAP are two of the most commonly confused Incoterms in China–UK shipping, and the difference between them has a direct effect on what you pay and who is responsible for managing UK customs clearance.
Both terms describe the supplier delivering goods to a named UK address, but they differ on one significant point: who handles import duty, VAT and customs clearance once the goods arrive.
DAP: buyer manages import clearance
Under DAP (Delivered at Place), the supplier arranges and pays for transport all the way to your agreed UK delivery address. However, once the goods reach the UK, you as the buyer are responsible for import customs clearance and for paying any duty and import VAT due before the goods can be released.
This means you, or your freight forwarder acting on your behalf, need to be ready to handle the customs declaration and settle the charges when the shipment arrives.
DDP: supplier manages import clearance
Under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), the supplier takes on this responsibility as well, arranging UK import clearance and paying duty and VAT on your behalf, then recovering these costs as part of the overall price charged to you.
This can appear more convenient, as you receive a single quoted cost, but it relies entirely on the supplier or their agent correctly classifying your goods, declaring an accurate value and complying with UK import requirements.
Why the cheapest quotation is not always the best
A DDP quotation that looks lower than expected can sometimes reflect an inaccurate customs declaration, an incorrect commodity code, or an undervalued shipment, rather than a genuinely competitive price. If HMRC later identifies an issue with the declaration, the importer of record, which may be your business, can still be held responsible even if a supplier's agent made the original declaration.
Working with a freight forwarder who manages DDP clearance on your behalf, or choosing DAP and handling clearance through your own trusted customs agent, generally gives you more visibility and control over what is being declared in your business's name.
Which option to choose
DAP tends to suit businesses that want oversight of the customs process and already work with a freight forwarder or customs agent. DDP can suit businesses that want a simpler, all-inclusive arrangement, provided the supplier's UK customs process is transparent and reliable.
Talk to us about your next shipment
Whichever term you use, it is worth understanding exactly what has been declared to UK customs on your behalf, since responsibility for the accuracy of that declaration ultimately sits with the importer of record.
